Cease and desist is a request or order that is normally issued by a lawyer, as a way to get someone to halt a defined activity. While a cease and desist letter (Abmahnung Rasch) can be written and sent by any individual, business, or organisation, the vast majority of them are drafted by professional lawyers. In the United States of America and some other jurisdictions, there are also special cease and desist orders which are issued by government authorities and law courts. A cease and desist letter is designed primarily as a request or order that is formulated as an alternative to legal action. If the recipient of the letter fails to stop the defined activity or chooses to take it up again at a later date, they may face legal action at the hands of the individual, business, organisation, judge, or government authority who drafted the letter request.

Cease and desist orders are generally given out by a cease and desist letter, which is a formal document sent to the recipients address. There are a wide range of different behaviours that may prompt such a response, including harassment by telephone, stalking and other forms of harassment, property disputes, neighbourhood disputes, boundary disputes, libel and slander, and terms or service violations. However, while these situations may be the most common reasons for cease and desist letters to be given out, there are also a wide range of less common situations that may require cease and desist orders to be taken out.

Depending on the nature of the behaviour defined in the document, there are a range of possible demands that may be made. For example, in the case of stalking and harassment, a cease and desist letter will usually demand that the recipient cease the threatening behaviour or face the implications of criminal charges. In the case of boundary and property disputes, the letter will usually demand the cessation of whatever particular behaviour is negatively impacting the letter sender. In other cases, such as libel, slander, and trademark infringement, a civil lawsuit is usually threatened if the recipient does not stop the defined activity. Cease and desist letters are used by a wide range of people and organisations as a way to protect their rights and assets in a wide range of situations.
